International Book Fair, INBOFA2012, is conceived to be an Academic Carnival for the promotion of serious readership through intellectual interactions at the instance of a Book Exhibition, rather than a mere trade-show of books. The focus of INBOFA2012 clearly extends beyond books and book-trade. An unusual Carnival, INBOFA2012 seeks to try and bring academic readership to the ridge of the ocean of knowledge, to have a feel of currents and eddies therein, and experience the publication industry's fascinating ways of distributive navigation. It attracts sellers and buyers, publishers and distributors, readers and readings, authors and editors, besides the general public, to one location of festive occasion. 

A variety of programmes such as theme based discussions, seminars, workshops, authors' meet, book launching and book reading sessions along with cultural and literary events offers additional incentives for the knowledge-seekers as well as the interested public to make it their destination.

University to gain from PURSE

Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, is one among the 30 universities in India selected by the Department of Science and Technology for funding under the DST-PURSE programme. Under it, the university will receive Rs.9 crore for development of research infrastructure.

The university has been placed eighth among the 30 top Indian universities selected under this programme based on its h-index (a measure to assess the quality of research in science), university authorities say.

The Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence (PURSE) scheme provides substantive research grants to universities based on the scientific publications in Science citation indexed journals through the SCOPUS database. The department identified universities with h-index ranging from 42-26 for R&D support during 2010-11. Mahatma Gandhi University had an h-index of 35.

The university will receive Rs.3 crore every year for three years. The grant is to be utilised by the School of Chemical Sciences, the School of Biosciences, the School of Environmental Sciences, and the School of Pure and Applied Physics, along with interdisciplinary centres such as the Centre for Nanosciences and Nanotechnology, Centre for Intensive Research in Basic Sciences, Inter-University Common Instrumentation Centre. A project implementation group (PIG) consisting of academics from all the science disciplines has been constituted by the university as per the DST guidelines.

Thomson Reuters Launches Book Citation Index for Web of Knowledge

Thomson Reuters, the world's leading source of information for businesses and professionals, announced the launch of the Book Citation Index, a new resource within the Web of Knowledge platform covering 25,000 books in the sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities.

The Book Citation Index is designed to enhance the powerful discovery and analysis capabilities of Web of Knowledge by incorporating comprehensive book citation data. Researchers can search for and identify the most relevant and esteemed literature along with the 12,000 peer-reviewed journals and 150,000 conference proceedings already indexed in Web of Knowledge, enabling users to navigate the links in citations across books, journals and proceedings. Books are indexed at the chapter level, resulting in improved searches and deeper insights into the citing behavior between books and the wider world of scholarly research.

Early Journal Content on JSTOR, Free to Anyone in the World

Journal content in JSTOR published prior to 1923 in the United States and prior to 1870 elsewhere freely available to anyone, anywhere in the world.  This “Early Journal Content” includes discourse and scholarship in the arts and humanities, economics and politics, and in mathematics and other sciences.  It includes nearly 500,000 articles from more than 200 journals. This represents 6% of the content on JSTOR.
